Did you miss them?

So, the illegals quit working for a day. Did anybody notice? Seriously, did this affect you at all?

Didn’t think so.

Galbraith R.I.P.

The great liberal economist John Kenneth Galbraith has died. Galbraith was a powerhouse economist from the 40s to the 60s. He ran the Office of Price Controls during WWII, advised Adlai Stevenson, JFK, and Lyndon Johnson, and was the Ambassador to India.

His economic theories were less impressive. Few economists accept his theory of countervailing power, his belief in peace time price controls, or that big businesses actually control prices and create tastes. His cultural commentary has held up better. And even that Man of the Right Whittaker Chambers saw merit in Galbraith’s critique of consumer culture.

Galbraith takes with him to the grave a lost virtue in American politics: dignity. Political arguments can and should be passionate. Galbraith brought a wicked wit to this battlefield. He also became good friends with his greatest adversaries: Milton Friedman and William F. Buckley. There was a time when an honest argument was respected as such. The passing of John Kenneth Galbraith reminds us that there was a time when the intellectuals of this country showed a little class.
