American Exports

For the purposes of your own edification, read the headlines on the The Australian today. There are two articles about the threat of American litigation to Australian firms. Great. I was just thinking that what the world really needs is to adapt the American system of exploiting human pain to move wealth from the people who created it to the legal-aristocracy.

At what point in history will U.S. lawyers become the most dangerous threat to International trade?

Comments:
The only thing I hate more than seemingly siding with trial lawyers, is you for making me do it.

Let me make sure I have this story right. An Australian company manufactured asbestos laden products and then sold them to US customers. Products caused cancer in customers. Customers are seeking restitution in the courts. The Australian firm is lobbying hard to prevent these customers from having their day in court.

And you side with the aussie asbestos cancer firm-o-death?

I agree that lawyers pose a threat to free trade, but it isn't by limiting the international market for carcinogenic house insulation. Unless I'm missing something
(besides a functioning liver) I think you've managed to pick the only story this decade where lawyers aren't satan-incarnates.

Well done. Jackass.

Of course the companies should be liable for any damage they cause. But the asbestos cases have become a revolving door for legally trained con-men(hyphenated?).

Our court system is unpredictable and unlimited. It is not the fact that the aussies are going to court that scares them. It is the fact that they are going to American courts that scares them. Our system gets even more ridiculous if the case is actually legitimate.
